Psychotherapist

Ben is a Psychotherapist registered with Australian Counselling Association (ACA), who has worked as a Psychotherapist, Counsellor, Educator, Case Manager and Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner with individuals, couples and families for over 15 years. He has worked in the not-for-profit sector in Perth, the Kimberley, and South East Asia in the specialised areas of sexual health, sexuality, gender identity, addiction, family conflict, and mental health.

Ben works from an integrative approach, utilising a client centred focus in his work with people. He works primarily within a psychodynamic framework, which acknowledges how people’s formative developmental experiences fundamentally shape experiences, perception and behaviour. He also draws from a variety of other therapeutic modalities and techniques including Person-centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Somatic Processing, and Interpersonal Psychotherapy. He provides counselling and psychotherapy to individuals and couples for a broad range of issues including- sexuality; sexual health concerns; sexual difficulties (sexual function/dysfunction); relationship difficulties; effective communication; depression; anxiety; abuse histories; grief and loss; and stress management.

Ben will work with you to develop a therapeutic relationship which is warm, safe and authentic. He believes that doing so helps to provide a solid basis as the main agent of change and healing. He values assisting his clients to develop their insight, as when doing so in this supportive therapeutic space we can generate the flexibility, empowerment, and choices which have previously been elusive and will facilitate the change needed.

Ben’s main goal is to assist the people he is working with to know themselves more authentically. In order to reach this self awareness, Ben encourages looking at not only the everyday patterns, but also reactions within the body, themes that occur in dreams and the dynamics that emerge in the therapeutic relationship. Through this deeper, genuine connection to self, people make transformative changes, or reach radical acceptance (even when these shifts are seemingly “small”, they are nonetheless absolute game changers). He believes that with the right support and guidance people have the capacity for growth and to achieve their goals.
